The Pain You Protect Will Run Your Life

One thing life never fails to deliver is change. It keeps moving whether you’re ready or not. Relationships shift, seasons end, and versions of you quietly fall away. If you’re on any kind of healing or growth journey, learning how to move with change becomes one of the greatest skills you can build.

Most people resist change, not because they’re weak, but because the mind is wired to seek safety in what feels familiar. Even when the familiar is painful. Even when it’s a cage with pretty wallpaper. Sometimes people stay in patterns that shrink them simply because it feels like known territory.

In Chapter 9 of The Untethered Soul, Michael A. Singer talks about the “thorn,” the unresolved pain sitting inside of you. The tender spot you unconsciously organize your whole life around. We all have them. It might be rejection, loneliness, abandonment, shame, feeling unseen, or feeling like you’re not enough.

Instead of healing the thorn, many people build a protective layer around it. You avoid intimacy so no one can hurt you. You people-please so no one leaves. You overachieve so that no one can judge you. You stay busy, so you don’t have to feel. You cling to relationships that drain you because emptiness feels scarier than dysfunction. It becomes a full-time job managing pain you never actually faced.

That’s where people get trapped. You think you solved the issue because you reduced the discomfort, but all you really did was rearrange your life around it.

Take loneliness, for example. Many people don’t fear being alone as much as they fear what being alone brings up inside of them. So they tolerate poor relationships, betray themselves to fit in, abandon standards, or stay attached to people who only half-love them. Not because they’re foolish, but because pain makes convincing arguments.

The problem is that people are not stable medicine. They can leave, change, withdraw, disappoint you, or pass away. Life can remove any external thing you used as a shield, and when that happens, the thorn is still there waiting.

This is why unhealed pain spreads into every area of life. It disguises itself as smaller daily anxieties. Do they like me? Did I say the wrong thing? Why haven’t they texted back? What if I end up alone? Why do I care so much? The surface issue changes, but the root often stays the same.

So what do you do? You stop making your life smaller to protect the wound. You turn inward and become the observer. You notice the feeling without becoming it.

Instead of saying, “I am lonely,” you begin to recognize that loneliness is something moving through you right now. Instead of saying, “I am broken,” you recognize that pain is arising in this moment. That shift matters more than it seems, because if you can notice the feeling, then you are not the feeling. You are the awareness noticing it.

You are the sky, not the storm. The sky holds the storm and remains the sky.

Freedom begins when you stop building your identity around temporary inner weather. Feel what comes up. Let it move. Let it pass. Stop treating every emotion like permanent truth.

There is a steadier part of you beneath all of it. The one who notices. And that part of you has been free the whole time.

Build Unshakable Self-Trust
$7.77

Do you ever find yourself overthinking decisions, replaying conversations, or looking to other people for answers you wish you could confidently give yourself?

Maybe you know what you want, but you second-guess it. Maybe you ask for advice, receive five different opinions, and somehow feel even more confused than when you started. Maybe you're tired of questioning yourself every time life asks you to make a decision.

The truth is that confidence isn't usually the problem. Trust is.

When you trust yourself, you don't need to have all the answers. You don't need certainty before taking action. You don't need to know exactly how everything will unfold. You trust that you'll be able to handle whatever happens next.

Build Unbreakable Self-Trust is a guided workbook designed to help you strengthen your relationship with yourself, rebuild confidence in your own judgment, and stop treating every mistake as evidence that you're failing.

Inside, you'll explore:
• What self-trust actually is (and what it isn't)
• How self-trust gets broken over time
• The difference between fear, anxiety, and intuition
• How to build evidence that you can rely on yourself
• How to navigate mistakes without losing confidence in yourself

Through thoughtful reflection prompts, practical exercises, and guided journaling, you'll begin creating the one thing self-trust is built on: evidence.

Because self-trust isn't believing you'll always get it right. It's knowing that even when life doesn't go according to plan, you'll still have your own back.
